A cheap solution to the hyacinth problem

Maybe it suits the pockets of the tenderpreneurs better to not use the insects.

Dougie Douglas writes by email:

Except for the fact that the Department of Water seems to be bankrupt, I do not understand why the government and municipalities like Brakpan and Hartebeespoort Dam use expensive (tendered for) water machines, with which they cannot remove the invasive hyacinth plants properly and speedily.

A mere call to the Grahamstown University (Rhodes University) will supply them with a cheap solution.

One has to send a picture or sample of the type of hyacinth plant one has in one’s waterways and the university will give (or even send you by mail) an insect that lives on hyacinth plants and devours them, cleaning up any dam within a week or two.

These insects multiply quite quickly after being set free on these type of plants.

It does not require chemicals or expensive machinery to solve the problem.

But maybe it suits the pockets of the tenderpreneurs better to not use the insects.
