United beat Bedfordview

The team will next play Springs Old Boys at Hosking Park on February 17.

Brakpan’s United Cricket Club started life in the bottom six of the Eastern Premier League with a victory albeit a close shave by six runs against a visiting Bedfordview outfit at Hosking Park on February 10.

Batting first, United managed to put together a score of 285 runs with the majority of the runs coming off the bat of their skipper Justin Gamble.

The left-hander was unbeaten at the wicket with a superb 121 not out while he was ably assisted up front by opener Juandre Johnson who played an excellent knock of 70.

With the ball, United’s bowlers had to dig hard to earn their victory as Bedfordview’s batsmen formed some good partnerships in the chase.

They fell just six runs short with two wickets in hand when their allotted 50 overs ran out.

Gamble, Vincent Herold and Sello Maupa got a brace of wickets in the innings for the hosts.

“With the bat we had some good partnerships and it was great to have some guys getting in and making it count,” said Gamble.

“Juandre was excellent up front and gave us a great platform.

“In the field we weren’t as good as we would like to have been with some sloppy fielding and a few too many extras, but luckily we did enough to get over the line in the end.”

The team will next play Springs Old Boys at Hosking Park on February 17.

That match is scheduled to begin at 10am.
