New karate organisation launched at tournament

Pandaram emphasised the need for self-defence.

Brakpan’s Dennis Pandaram Karate Academy recently hosted a martial arts friendly tournament, which saw the club taking on karatekas from Witbank, Delmas and Polokwane.

The day was successful for the Dennis Pandaram club as they finished the day with 34 medals (11 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze).

The tournament also saw a new independent organisation being launched.

The Traditional Karate Africa (TKA) organisation was started with Pandaram as its president and Themba Mani Ndlovu as the vice-president.

“The style has been used for the last 50 years in the country, however, not everybody adapts to the same style, form and methodology of teaching,” said Pandaram.

“We have to evolve and continue with research. We, as TKA, have researched further. In a more scientific and more in depth knowledge of how to incapacitate an opponent on the street. We also need to cater for people who are not exposed to the western world.”

Pandaram pointed out that they aim to reach people from all walks of life.

“TKA is the only organisation that is going out into the townships and offering their services free of charge,” said the local sensei.

“We run an outreach initiative in terms of getting the people from the townships to get into karate at no extra cost. We are recognising people with potential and giving them instructor status so that they can start teaching.”

Pandaram emphasised the need for self-defence.
