Charity auction to honour Madiba

On July 17, Stephan Welz & Co. will host a Mandela Memorabilia Auction with over 200 lots of "Madiba Magic" available to the public.

Proceeds of a portion of the auction will benefit Liliesleaf Trust and Thembekile Mandela Foundation.

The collection is worth between R2.8 million and R4.7 million, according to Savo Tufegdzic, Mandela memorabilia specialist at Stephan Welz & Co.

“People are still talking about the huge collection of Mandela memorabilia that film producer Anat Singh bought at one of our auctions last year for over R1.1 million,” he says.

One of the highlights of this auction is Hand Studies, a rare original study of Mandela’s left and right hands. Many studies of Mandela’s hands have been done, including the well-known Hand of Africa, but the work to be auctioned is unique, because it is one-of-a-kind and there were no editions made from it. The work was initiated by his granddaughter Ndileka Mandela, , who inked Madiba’s hands. Together they pressed his left and right hands on one side of the paper sheet, and then the sheet was turned and a second imprint was made on the opposite side. The work, signed by Mandela on both sides, has been valued at R200 000 – R300 000.

Other significant items to be auctioned include signed photographs of the last time Mandela voted, and of the former president with Michael Jackson, as well as many autographed books, comics, first day covers and coins issued in celebration of his achievements.

Proceeds from the first 22 lots to be auctioned will benefit two charitable organisations. The sale of Alan Dent’s Rivonia 10 and Rivonia 12 paintings which mark the 50th anniversary of the Rivonia Trial, as well as an A3 lithograph edition of the ANC Freedom Charter will benefit the Liliesleaf Trust, while the sale of Hand Studies along with 18 other lots donated by Ndileka Mandela, will benefit the Thembekile Mandela Foundation.

The auction will be held on the fourth floor, South Tower, Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, Johannesburg. The Nelson Mandela Memorabilia catalogue is available online at stephanwelzandco.co.za.
