Residents of Annan Road across from the 007 shopping centre in Carletonville say that trucks stopping in the area illegally are literally an accident waiting to happen.

According to two residents, Julian Dawson and Willem Boshoff, residents have been complaining to the municipal traffic department for some time.

For some reason, trucks have started using the sidewalks and traffic island across from the shopping centre as a place to stop.

The heavy trucks not only destroy the sidewalks and paving but also block the sight of motorists turning into Annan Road.

Although several concerned residents received permission to place rocks on the sidewalks to block trucks and other vehicles stopping there, this has not been enough to stop this illegal parking. The problem drivers are also not deterred by signs indicating that they are not allowed to stop there.

During the Herald’s visit, one of the problem trucks literally pulled up next to a sign showing that vehicles may not stop there.

Except for the danger to other road users, the residents complain that many truck drivers urinate on the sidewalks. Some also sell livestock and other goods from their trucks parked next to the crossing, despite the fact that there are signs showing that no trading may take place there. The concerned residents feel that the only way illegal parking and selling can be stopped is if municipal traffic officers regularly visit the area to fine offenders.

“This is the main entrance to Carletonville, and these people are causing it to look terrible. We want the municipality to assist as they are the only ones who can stop this,” Dawson complains.

Although the Herald took the issue to the Merafong City Local Municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, no feedback was received by printing time.
