The work done by a government contractor on the main road through Welverdiend leaves much to be desired.

The Herald reported last month that cracks started appearing on the main road through the town within months after it was rebuilt.

Although residents were at first overjoyed that the road was being fixed, they became disappointed when several cracks started to appear in the area of Foodzone and next to the filling station.

Rex Majawa, who was until recently the site manager at the project, confirmed that they were aware of the cracks and said that they brought back engineers to the project as asphalt is not good enough for the heavy traffic that this road has to carry.

Although these cracks were repaired, residents alerted the Herald to other deeper cracks in Station Street and close to the railway line at the entrance to the town.

These large cracks are so deep that one can see the gravel under the road surface. If they are left unattended, the water seeping through during the coming rainy season will cause further damage.

As the damage is on a provincial road, the Herald contacted Lesiba Mpya, the spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, as well as Bulelwa Thomas, Chief Roads Superintendent at the same department.

Although Mpya acknowledged receipt of the Herald’s questions, no other feedback was received.
