Several illegal firearms were also confiscated.

The SAPS in Gauteng, together with the SANDF and other law enforcement agencies conducted Operation Prosper in Kloof Gold Mine between Westonaria and Fochville on September 8. The operation resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects.

The operation was conducted by members of Public Order Policing (POP), Westonaria Visible Policing, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the SANDF and Sibanye Protection Services.

During the operation, one suspect was arrested for possession of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and gold-bearing material. A man and a woman were also arrested after they were found in possession of gold-bearing material. Seven suspects were arrested for being in the country without the required documentation, in contravention of the Immigration Act.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Westonaria magistrates’ court soon.

The SAPS and SANDF will continue conducting integrated operations to combat illegal mining and other related criminal activities.
