Shooting claims two from Mooitooi near Carletonville

The owner managed to do a daring escape.

Residents of the settlement at Mooitooi between Carletonville and Blybank were murdered during a violent attack this week.

A group of people was sitting outside on the ground outside Pule’s Tuck Shop at about 01:15 on October 18.

They were out so late because they had gathered for a funeral earlier.

According to the owner, Pule Faku, he is still traumatised.

“I was standing outside the shop when I heard them cocking their guns,” he says. Thinking fast, Faku ran and jumped over the back fence around his yard to escape the attackers, who spoke Sesotho.

While he disappeared around the corner, about eight masked men stormed the group sitting outside his tuck shop and shot randomly at them with a 9 mm pistol and an AK-47 rifle.

Two of Faku’s friends, Mavis and Mike Mabutho, died at the scene, while two of his family members, Mami and Chimmy Phorojane, were shot and had to be rushed to Carletonville Hospital by ambulance.

The attackers also grabbed a jar with money Faku kept inside the shop.

According to Faku, he was so scared by the attack that he went to sleep elsewhere afterwards.

What made him and his family even more scared is that the attackers allegedly threatened that they would return.

Carletonville detectives are investigating two cases of murder, two cases of attempted murder, as well as a business robbery case.
