Bunny says bye-bye to ‘Idols’ dream

'Idols SA' contestant Bunny Majaja from Florida Glen in Johannesburg was on Tuesday night announced as the next singer to be voted out of the reality talent competition.

The Strepsils Scream-O-Meter, which measures the crowd’s response to performances, during Sunday’s top five Spectacular demonstrated how close the race to the final is this season. After the contestants performed their first round of songs, Bunny was right at the top of the Scream-O-Meter behind 21-year-old Sonke Mazibuko, but they then both dropped right to the bottom at the end of round two.

But it’s the votes and only the votes that matter, and when this week’s votes were counted only Sonke, 26-year-old Musa Sukwene from eMalahleni, and 19-year-old Brenden Ledwaba from Graskop were safe. That left 19-year-old Zoe Zana from Cape Town and 26-year-old Bunny in the bottom two.

Judge Randall Abrahams said the competition is so tight this year because the top five contestants were all very good, and the voting keeps varying because all the contestants have had inconsistent performances over the weeks.

“It’s anybody’s game,” he said. And with that in mind, the judges decided not to use their ‘save’ option at all this season. “Anybody on that stage, including you Bunny, would be a worthy winner,” judge Gareth Cliff remarked.

The top five were mentored for their performances last week by Pam De Menezes of South African girl group The Arrows, and they were in the house at the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium in Pretoria to perform their hit, ‘Spin My World Around’.

The remaining four contestants will again each perform two songs in the top four Spectacular at the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium on Friday, 8 November, with the added pressure of two duets.

This week the top four will be mentored by Mzansi superstar Zonke.
