Celebs mourn Simba, leave J&B Met

Zimbabwean born Mhere joined the Top Billing team in 2010 after wining their presenter search. Simba shared his presenter search journey on Top Billing this Thursday.

He attended Rand Park Ridge High School and went on to study B.Comm Accounting at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Although he will be best remembered as part of the Top Billing team, he is also well known for his voice over and MCing work – most notably for the Miss SA pageant in 2013.

Here are some of his career highlights.

Simba inspired many people to flip the channel to Top Billing on a Thursday night to see his face flash across their screens. He appeared to have an infectious zest for life and a positive outlook on life.

His friendship with co-presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee was a bromance like no other. This video looks at their friendship and great presenting chemistry.

Simba was to be part of a panel of judges for the new Top Billing presenter search.

He will be remembered by friends, family and fans.

“Mhere was a talented young presenter who won the hearts of all those who watched him on Top Billing and other shows. His passing will leave a void in the SABC that will be difficult to fill,” said IFP chairman Blessed Gwala in a statement.

“He was a charismatic personality who was a true professional in the broadcasting industry.”

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters sent condolences to the family of television presenter Simbarashe “Simba” Mhere who died in a car accident in Johannesburg on Saturday.

“Minister Peters conveys her condolences to the Mhere family and friends, including those of the unidentified friend who also passed on in the same car,” spokesman Ishmael Mnisi said in a statement.

“May their souls rest in peace.”

Mnisi said government would ensure that negligent motorists were dealt with.

“All road users need to make a personal contribution towards saving lives by pledging to obey all traffic rules and regulations thereby taking personal responsibility of our safety on our roads,” he said.

Simba inspired a whole lot of people by showing them that you don't have to be well known to get to high places.
