Tree63 reunited

After a seven-year hiatus, internationally renowned rock band Tree63 has announced the release of a seventh album, raising both awareness and funds through the popular crowd-funding site Kickstarter.

The decision to record another album spurred from the overwhelming response from fans during a series of reunion events last year.

Whether this means they’re back together is uncertain at this point, but lead singer John Ellis says: “We’re making a new record and we’ll be playing shows together again, but we all have other things we’re involved with, like producing other artists and making our own music, so whether this means a permanent future for Tree63 remains to be seen. One day at a time.”

Though Ellis has since moved back to South Africa from the US, Daniel Ornellas (bass) has been living in Nashville touring and producing, and Darryl Swart (drums) started a recording studio in Canada. Although miles apart, the guys kept in touch and remained friends through the years.

When asked what he’s missed most about the band, Ellis says: “The hard-won camaraderie and companionship of close friends that came with years of being in the trenches together, and playing live. When you’re younger you’re almost too young to really understand what a privilege it is to find other people to make music with, especially if you’re successful at it.”

He continues: “Singing songs you have written yourself? That’s a pretty amazing thing to do with your life.” He also admits that even though the guys have all ventured into other musical projects, none has been as special as being a part of Tree63.

Though Ellis will continue to produce solo albums, he looks forward to teaming up with the band and exploring new avenues. He says: “Tree63 is a special thing. It requires a certain kind of song,

and outside that context I can write more broadly but I absolutely love both.”
