‘Your faith kept us going’ − Cheslin Kolbe dedicates World Cup win to wife Layla

"You were always trusting for the World Cup victory that would make up for the tough times," Cheslin said of his wife, Layla.

Just hours after lifting the Rugby World Cup trophy, Springboks star Cheslin Kolbe has thanked his wife for her prayer and faith.

The Springboks edged New Zealand’s All Blacks 12-11 in an incredible and tense Rugby World Cup final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. It was a record fourth Webb Ellis Cup for South Africa. Kolbe was sent to the bench on a yellow card for the last few minutes of the match, and spent most of the time with his head buried in his hands or jersey.

He was consoled by many of his teammates, and by fans online, and took to Instagram this week to thank everyone for their support.

Penning an emotional open letter to his wife, Layla, he thanked her for her faith and prayers.

“Speak it and you will receive it through the Almighty. Babe, it’s because of you that we are who and where we are today. I literally went through your posts to see this step-by-step belief that destiny will happen.”

He described their son, Cayden, as their “Toulon baby through all the tough times” and said Layla never gave up hope.

“You were always trusting for the World Cup victory that would make up for the tough times. Your faith and prayers kept us going and made us strong! You are beyond amazing and I thank you and love you for everything”

Layla has been open about the struggles she and Cheslin have faced over the years, including two consecutive (surgical) miscarriages.

Taking to social media after the Boks’ victory, Layla posted a picture of the couple kissing over the trophy and joked “Op God se Kant!”

‘She’s an absolute legend’

Cheslin’s praise was echoed by Rachel Kolisi who gushed over her rugby bestie.

She described the win as “a miracle” and thanked Jesus.
