Movie Review: As Jy Sing is just plain bad

This phony attempt at a film has solely been built around the celebrity of singer-heartthrobs.

The story has been designed to give them an excuse to talk in monotonous speech patterns in between their songs and to take off their shirts. The supposed send-up of Bok van Blerk, emerging Rambo-like from the water, and Bobby van Jaarsveld taking his shirt off in a ridiculously bad imitation of Bo Derek in 10 takes cinema to its lowest point this year.

Combining an old-style militarist group of Kamp Staaldraad-style celebrities who are supposed to clash with musical celebrities makes Glee look like Shakespeare. The songs barely register on the hit-parade radar and in contrast to other misc-heavy Afrikaans offerings such as Liefling and Pretville, the choreography is clumsy and superficial.

The acting is bad. Robbie Wessels’ extreme caricature of a school principal is particularly embarrassing. If this is the standard of Afrikaans film in 2013, then the industry is in serious trouble.
