Fuel prices nearly flat for May, says AA

No great shakes in the fuel price this month.

South Africans can expect fuel prices to remain near their current levels in May, with changes of only a few cents per litre.

This is according to the Automobile Association which was commenting on unaudited Central Energy Fund data released this week.

“The slight over-recovery in the basic fuel price which was seen at mid-month has subsequently been offset by increased international petroleum prices and a modest weakening of the Rand against the US dollar,” the Association commented.

“Assessing the trajectory of the fuel price remains difficult, with considerable volatility evident in both the exchange rate and international product prices.”

The AA said that despite the steep jump in fuel prices since February, the prices at the pumps were still well below the highs of over R14 a litre which were seen in 2014.

“We advise motorists to take advantage of the current more moderate fuel price environment to build up savings against possible future increases,” the Association concluded.
