The girls from Karabo centre pass extremely well

Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science and Commerce’s girls class of 2017 have proved that girls are capable of passing mathematics and physical science with flying colours.

More than 50 per cent of the girls from this centre passed mathematics and physical science with distinctions. With more girls achieving distinctions than the boys.

This centre is a non-profit organisation based at the Vosloorus Comprehensive School in Ekurhuleni. It assists learners with mathematics, physical science, commerce, and accounting.

In total, the centre had 100 students who wrote matric last year, 76 from the Vosloorus branch and 24 from the Thokoza branch. Both branches obtained a 100 per cent matric pass rate in 2017.

Of the 76 students who wrote matric in 2017, 30 obtained distinctions in mathematics and 31 distinctions in physical science.

Speaking to Kathorus MAIL, Collin Forka, chairperson of Karabo, said, “We have improved in females passing, with most of them achieving more distinctions than males. We are sending a strong message that females have potential to that of males if given an opportunity.”

He added, “We would like to thank all our sponsors, which include Joy Global Foundation, BEE Trust, VH Fibre Optic, Kagosan Foundation, Rite Metals, Rand Water Foundation and Rand Merchant Bank for the confidence they have shown in us. We are proving that they are putting their resources to good use.” Said Forka.

In conclusion, Forka appealed for sponsorship to sustain the programme. “We are having a serious challenge with funds and resources. Our enrolment increases annually and is constraining the resources and funds, hence, we appeal for more sponsorship,” said Forka.

Karabo has been producing a 100 per cent matric pass rate since its inception in 2013 and is playing a crucial role in assisting poor disadvantaged students from townships with mathematics, science, and commerce.
