Four illegal taverns closed, owners arrested

Four illegal taverns were closed down at the Primrose’s informal settlements during the police operation.

The Primrose police were hard at work last weekend visiting all three of Primrose’s informal settlements, with the aim of bringing a stop to the illegal sale of alcohol.

“During the operation, officers entered the Makause, Delport and Marathon informal settlements on foot and observed residents buying alcohol at the four different taverns,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

“Each of the owners was asked for a liquor licence which they could not give to police.”

The owner of each establishment was arrested.

The suspects, aged between 37 and 50 years old, were charged with selling liquor without a licence.

A large amount of alcohol was confiscated from each tavern and taken to Primrose Police Station, where it will be destroyed at a later stage.

“We once again warn the community of Makause and other informal settlements to refrain from selling liquor without a valid licence as this is a crime,” Maome said.

“We will continue to hold similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol in the informal settlements.”

The arrested suspects were detained at the Primrose Police Station, but were later released after paying admission of guilt fines.
