Local church helps young people tackle mental health issues
"After church, our members still need to improve as people and lead their best lives. We assist in how to do it in a godly manner," said Mabona.
To tackle mental health issues and dismantle associated stigmas, the Ekurhuleni South District of the Seventh Day Adventist Church held a ground-breaking mental wellness event on October 19.
The event aimed to bridge the understanding between medical and spiritual approaches to mental health.
Sutukazi Mabona, a professional social worker specialising in youth support, spoke about the unique challenges of young people.

“Churches must face real-world issues head-on and provide guidance that addresses both spiritual and mental well-being,” Mabona explained.
“The human mind is intricate; we need to meet members’ mental health needs holistically.”
Reitumetse Sehlako, senior youth president for Ekurhuleni South, highlighted the church’s educational programs for youth aged 16 to 30 years.
“We cover self-awareness, finances, and marriage preparation, even engaging in outdoor activities to build community,” said Sehlako.
