Germiston athlete wins sprint in club debut

Kiyana Klassen made a strong start to the 2025 season, winning her first club race in the girls U9 60m with a time of 9.38 seconds.

Kiyana Klassen kicked off her 2025 Sub Youth Track & Field season with a spectacular performance, clocking an impressive 9.38 seconds in the girls U9 category.

This event marked her official club debut, and she wasted no time in making a strong impression finishing in first place in her heat.
Kiyana’s journey in athletics began in Grade One, where her passion for the sport quickly became evident.

Over time, that passion, paired with discipline and training, has shaped her into a promising young athlete.

Her mother, Anastacea Klassen, spoke proudly about her daughter’s dedication and development.

“She’s passionate and hardworking. She’s got the talent, and now that she’s training with a coach, she’s really excelling,” said Anastacea.

“In her debut year, she only competed in school sports, and now she’s stepped up into club-level competition and won.”

Anastacea shared how Kiyana is learning to balance her academic and athletic pursuits, noting that she’s becoming more focused and mature.

“She now understands what hard work means and how to balance her studies with training. She’s developing a deeper understanding of the sport and is starting to see how far her passion can take her,” said Anastacea.

Kiyana is no stranger to success. In school-level competitions, she placed third at the District Championships in the U8 category and has excelled in both the 60m and 80m sprint events.

Off the track, she’s also excelling consistently achieving straight A’s throughout the terms.

Looking ahead, her family hopes that her dedication will open further opportunities, and eventually get bursary.

“We’re aiming for a bursary by the time she finishes Grade Seven. Her confidence has grown tremendously. She’s overcome fear and is now thriving,” said Anastacea. “She’s a reminder that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve.”

The league opened with a vibrant display of talent and enthusiasm, attracting more than 1 100 young athletes aged seven to 13 years from across the province. Middle-distance events stood out, highlighting the endurance and discipline developing at this competitive level.

Among the highlights was the girls U7 60m sprint, where Morgan Du Randt of IHT dominated the field with a winning time of 10.08 seconds.

Hot on her heels was Miane Nel, finishing second at 10.19 seconds, followed by Lebo Mamonyane of East AC, who secured third place in 10.38 seconds.

“In the boys U11 long jump, spectators witnessed some impressive leaps. Christopher Brits of IHT claimed first place with a remarkable jump of 5.09 meters, narrowly edging out his teammate Simon Britz, who took second with 5.08m.

“The third spot was earned by Ani Lake Cletus, who jumped an impressive 4.95m,” said CGA PR and communications officer, Nongcebo Siziba.

“The boys U13 1500m race featured fierce competition among athletes, many fresh from the recent cross-country season. Indiphile Myeki of Katlehong led the pack, winning with a time of 4:25.97.

“Close behind was Mashamaite Mabitsela of East AC, finishing second at 4:30.52, while Philani Luthuli of Boxer secured third place in 4:42.86,” added Siziba.

The CGA applauds the remarkable turnout and the unwavering commitment from coaches, parents, and clubs. Their continuous support is vital in nurturing young talent and building a strong foundation for athletics in the province.

With the season underway, League 2 was scheduled for October 4.
