368 suspects arrested in Germiston and Ekurhuleni crackdown
From Friday, August 22 to Sunday morning, the police arrested 368 suspects for various offenses.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led a successful multidisciplinary high-density operation in Germiston/Primrose policing precincts as part of Operation Shanela.
During the weekend operation, they arrested 72 illegal immigrants, 54 people for drunk driving, one suspect for dealing in drugs, four for possession of drugs, and one for exceeding the speed limit.
Ekurhuleni detectives arrested 165 suspects overnight, including 13 for crimes against women and children.

Compliance and inspection checks were conducted in Germiston and Primrose, resulting in eight liquor outlets being closed for non-compliance.
From Friday, August 22, to Sunday morning, the police arrested 368 suspects for various offences.
Detectives arrested 165 suspects during Operation Shanela across Ekurhuleni policing precincts on Saturday.
The arrests include 100 people for contact crimes, 16 for contact-related crimes, 27 for other serious crimes, and 12 for gender-based violence-related issues.
Mthombeni said Germiston has faced challenges like truck hijackings, assaults, and murders.
“We came out to support the stations. As it is Women’s Month, women-led integrated operations were held, which proved successful. Seven were arrested for using public transport to transport people,” said Mthombeni.
Mthombeni wants communities to feel free, trust law enforcement, and feel safe walking the streets.
“Crime pattern analysis shows house robberies are high among other crimes in Germiston,” said Mthombeni.
Similar operations reached areas like Benoni, Tsakane and Chloorkop.

The SAPS conducted an operation, Vala Umgodi, targeting illegal mining activities in the Benoni policing precinct.

The operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects for illegal mining and illegal immigration.
Police seized a significant amount of equipment and materials, including pendukas, gas bottles, oxygen bottles, steel pots, stampers, spades, shovels, pangas, steel balls, gold-bearing material, electric cords, plastic basins, a crusher machine, pickaxes, drive belts, and grinders.
Mthombeni commended members for their dedication and work done to ensure they move towards creating a crime-free community.
