Young Germiston author releases her second book

"I mostly write after school, or sometimes at school when there’s no teacher around. I’m always jotting something down, and sometimes I even write comics.”

Young author Oyama Mashazi has published her second book, Madeline and Livile in Ballet Class.

Inspired by the story Best Friends Wear Pink Tutus, nine-year-old Oyama crafted her tale, fueled by her dream of becoming a ballerina.

“I enjoyed the writing process,” said Oyama.

“I don’t play outside much because I need to stay home and write stories.

“I mostly write after school, or sometimes at school when there’s no teacher around. I’m always jotting something down, and sometimes I even write comics.”

Oyama Mashazi has published her second book, Madeline and Levile in Ballet Class.

Oyama’s mother, Thuli Mashazi, runs an independent publishing company, Lyricity Pty Ltd, where the book was published.

“My mom helped me refine the manuscript and develop the characters and storyline. We also added activities for Madeline and Livile,” Oyama explained.

“When I held the finished book, I felt so happy and excited. We’re planning a book tour around Germiston and Johannesburg.”

Thuli, a seasoned author and English teacher, recognised Oyama’s talent early on.

“She started scribbling in my diaries when she was very young. I encouraged her to write something I could read, and when she did, I knew she had potential,” Thuli said.

“Her writing has matured over time, and now, at just nine, she’s already published her second book.”

Thuli expressed her pride in her daughter’s achievements.

“It’s a blessing to have a gifted child, but it can be challenging to balance everything.

“Sometimes I have to set aside my own work to focus on Oyama’s writing. Her first book, The Boy Who Loved Candy, was a big step, and now she’s taken another leap.”

Oyama’s passion for storytelling, coupled with her mother’s guidance, has set her on an impressive literary journey at a young age.
