New leadership for taxi industry elected in Gauteng

The Johannesburg, Midrand, Tembisa Taxi Association (JMTTA) held its elective conference and AGM at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, bringing together key stakeholders and taxi industry members on April 23.

The gathering served as a platform to reflect on the association’s progress, challenges and future direction.

The event opened with performances by gospel singers Dumi Mkokstad and Mthandeni SK, creating an energetic atmosphere for the day’s proceedings.

Outgoing deputy chairperson Mr Sibeko delivered a welcome address and received a warm reception.

Representatives from 19 taxi associations attended the conference, highlighting the unity and strength of the industry.

A comprehensive report covered the JMTTA’s strategic and operational performance over the past year, with further insights into developments and innovations in the sector.

Chris Ngobeni, a regular commuter who relies on taxis daily, praised Sibeko’s leadership.

“Under his leadership, I feel safe when using a taxi. I’ve stopped using my car, and I’ve saved money. His leadership has made a huge difference in my life.”

Sibeko was re-elected as chairperson, securing 120 votes.

Mr Nzaba and Mr Thwala were elected as deputy chairpersons. In his acceptance speech, Sibeko expressed appreciation for the support:

“I am humbled and honoured to be re-elected as the chairperson of JMTTA. I look forward to continuing our work with our members and ensuring the taxi industry remains safe and efficient.”

Members of the JMTTA welcomed the outcome of the election.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Nkosi Nxumalo.

“Mr Sibeko’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping the future of our industry, and I’m excited to see what the future holds under his continued guidance.”
