Ekurhuleni fires claim one life and destroy Germiston businesses

Two separate fires broke out in the City of Ekurhuleni, one gutting a Kempton Park home and another ravaging a Germiston workshop and fast-food outlet, destroying several vehicles.

Two separate fires broke out in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) on November 5, damaging businesses in Germiston and claiming a life in Kempton Park.

The one incident occurred on Meyer Street, Germiston, in the afternoon.

CoE DEMS received a call at about 12:48 and swiftly responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a panel-beating workshop engulfed in flames.

Further investigation revealed that a neighbouring fast-food shop had also caught fire and was completely burnt out.

Approximately nine vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, and the roof of the workshop had collapsed.

“The first engine on site immediately called for backup, and five more fire trucks were dispatched to assist,” said Maswazi Mdluli, DEMS media liaison officer.

Mdluli noted that panel-beating businesses often store gas cylinders on their premises, which poses significant risks and highlights the need for stricter regulation and compliance within the sector.

In a separate incident earlier that morning, a six-room house in Allen Grove, Kempton Park, was gutted by fire, resulting in the death of an adult woman.

On arrival, DEMS crews found the roof section had already collapsed. Firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the blaze.

The causes of both fires remain undetermined. The scenes have been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.

Residents are reminded that in life-threatening emergencies within the CoE, they can dial 011 458 0911 for immediate assistance.
Mdluli further urged residents and business owners to be cautious of fire hazards and risks to prevent unnecessary fires.
