Sam Green Road Bridge damage sparks urgent warning to motorists and pedestrians
A crash that damaged the Sam Green Road Bridge sidewalk has intensified safety concerns as councillor Kade Guerreiro urges the city to fix the structure and improve pedestrian access.
Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro has urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution at the Sam Green Road Bridge following a recent accident that damaged the bridge’s sidewalk pillars.
Guerreiro expressed growing concern over the bridge’s overall safety, noting that he has previously raised issues regarding its condition.
The bridge, built in 1969, serves as a key connection between Tunney Ext 6 and North Reef Road, providing a crucial shortcut to the Tunney business district and accommodating trucks and other vehicles.

“The recent accident adds to my anxieties about the bridge. Years ago, it sustained damage from a vehicle collision, and now the sidewalk is unsafe,” Guerreiro said.

He also criticised the city’s temporary measures. “Instead of repairing the damage, officials erected concrete blocks as barriers, which prevent pedestrians from using the sidewalks safely. Now, I fear they cannot even use the sidewalk without risking a fall onto the highway below.”
The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has urged all road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly during adverse weather conditions that could lead to accidents.

DEMS media liaison officer William Ntladi emphasised that while the city is not immune to weather-related incidents, rescue teams are prepared for any eventualities.
“The DEMS summer awareness campaign will run until the last weekend of March 2026, ensuring that residents and motorists are alert and prepared,” said Ntladi.
