“Concerned resident”, Denlee, writes:
I am writing this letter as a very concerned resident of Denlee.
Every morning on my way to work I travel along Refinery Road.
On my daily commute I have to drive past a new settlement that is developing under the bridge on Refinery Road, close to the Germiston Lake.
For the past few weeks I have watched as this little community grows.
The area surrounding this settlement has becoming increasingly dirty, with litter and various other waste materials.
I hate to think where the residents have to perform their toilet duties at this point of the settlement’s development.
Not only is this a health risk to both people on the site and the surrounding areas, but the site is just too unbearable to look at on a daily basis.
I see that washing is done on a daily basis, fires are lit and food is cooked.
I even see that blankets and mugs have been brought in to make living conditions better for the “new residents”.
As a resident in the area it makes me feel very sad to think that this is what we have come to; where a person can live where ever they choose and nothing is being done about it.
Before long, I feel, crime will follow this gathering and once again the residents will be paying the price for this.
I have seen the police drive past this gathering so I am sure they are aware of the settlement.
I am fully aware that some people are victims of circumstances and may not have jobs or a home, but I still do not think that sitting by a lake all day and sleeping in the sun is going to help the situation either.
I am hoping something can be done about this.
