Draw for seniors, but impressive win for juniors
Germiston City Football Club had a mixed bag of results in their weekly Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League fixtures.
While the Germiston City Football Club’s senior teams continued their Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League with an away match against Old Benonians Football Club, the u-17 team shone in their Super League Cup match against Wits University Football Club, last Saturday.
The win means that the team will take part in a cup final, for the first time in five years, and their first Super League Cup final.

The win comes after an earlier 0-9 league defeat for Germiston at the hands of their illustrious opponents.
“Coach Calvin Taelo has built a formidable side and the game showed that the team is one to watch,” said club chairperson Peter Oliver.
In the blustery wind at Marks Park, Wits took the lead in the 30th minute of the match due to a blundered back bass by the Germiston defence.
The visiting team did not let the goal derail their game plan and they continued to push for a goal, sadly, to no avail as the team went into half-time 0-1 in favour of the home team.
Germiston got straight to work in the second half and applied unrelenting pressure on the home side which was rewarded with a goal in the 60th minute by Pulakana Makabata.
The match went into extra time which almost saw a goal from Wits after Germiston goalkeeper Bonginkosi Sijako fumbled the ball, causing the visiting team’s hearts to flutter, but he recovered well and the scores remained level – calling for an extension of extra time.
But still, the scores remained level.
During the penalty shoot-out, Germiston came to life scoring three goals and taking the score to 4-1 in Germiston’s favour, securing them the victory.
“I am immensely proud of the players and coach for their dedication and hard work throughout the season,” said Oliver.

In the seniors match against Old Bens, Germiston, playing against the wind in the first half, battled to contend with the ongoing attack from the home side.
Old Bens, however, were unable to sneak past Germiston’s defence to score and the teams went into half-time 0-0.
In the second half, Germiston came out refreshed and hammered the home team’s defence, but several tremendous saves from the Old Bens goalkeeper kept the scores level up to the final whistle, ending the match in a draw.
Germiston’s reserve team drew their match 0-0 with their Old Bens opponents.
