East Rand United secures big win against Delmas team

According to ERU chairperson Marius de Vos, the game against Delmas was difficult and the players struggled to find their rhythm.

East Rand United (ERU) defeated Delmas Rugby Club 20-14 in Reiger Park on April 20, and will now take on Benoni Northerns in the President’s Cup plate final.

According to ERU chairperson Marius de Vos, the game against Delmas was difficult and the players struggled to find their rhythm.

De Vos said coach Godfrey Mbangeni had limited options and resources at his disposal and selected a very youthful and inexperienced team.

Both the captain, Cameron Rooi, and vice-captain, Velile Tshabalala, were sitting in the stands due to injuries sustained against Nigel the previous game.

East Rand United battle Delmas on the rugby field.

“Delmas was a tough opponent and played well. They opened the scoring after ERU could not convert early pressure into points. Delmas led 7-0 after 15 minutes of play,” said De Vos.

Anele Magubane captained the team and his experience came in handy.

“He scored a very good second try when he finished off a good team move. He also kicked a penalty and a conversion for a personal tally of 10 points,” De Vos added.

De Vos said one of the best players of the day was Rudi Tokkie, who opened the scoring for ERU.

Another player who stood out was Sthembile Ndude, who scored the winning try after coming off the bench.

“Don Mosoma also had a good game and entertained the crowd with his silky skills. Well done to the coaching staff and team for pulling off another win for the club,” said De Vos.
