Learner protest turns violent

A policeman was thrown by a rock which a learner thre as part of a Cosas protest

NIGEL – Approximately 300 learners took to the streets on Wednesday July 30 as part of an unorganized and unauthorised march. The protest took place throughout Duduza reached its climax at SAPS Duduza.

A police officer was thrownwith a rock against the eye; after which the student was arrested. The protest took place throughout Gauteng. The protest is being led by the “Congress of South African Students’ (Cosas).

On July 30 a memorandum demands was handed to the Gauteng Department of Education. Negotiations between Cosas and the Gauteng Department of Education started on August 4 where the demands will be discussed. Learners are requesting the banning of the publication of matric results among others.
