Arthur Thokoane said there are other important service delivery projects in the municipality that is a bigger priority for now.
“After taking into account the capacity and resources required to implement this project and comparing it to that of other projects, the decision was taken to put geographical name changes in abeyance,” Thokoane said.
This does not mean that name changes are entirely off the cards however.
Thokoane said a name change legal notice would be re-advertised in the future and in different publications to allow inclusive and maximum public participation.
Last year a legal notice which called for the establishment of a geographical name change committee and appeared in HERAUT on 20 November and caused quite a controversy.
Issues were raised about the process of establishing the committee and transparency thereof, while others objected that the short space of time applicants were given to respond, did not ensure maximum public participation.
