NIGEL – A young woman is in hospital after a near head on collision on the Heidelberg/Nigel Road at 16:30 on November 10.
According to eyewitnesses, an elderly man was driving east in his Alfa Romeo and collided with a young woman in a Citi Golf after he made an illegal u-turn.
The impact pushed the Golf onto the shoulder embankment leaving her vehicle overturned.
Eyewitnesses who arrived on the scene first found the driver of the Golf hanging from her seat and pushed her car over in an attempt to retrieve her. The Alfa Romeo came to a standstill in the road with the driver sustaining minor injuries.
Nigel Ambulance Emergency Services and Heidelberg Medic Volunteers arrived at the scene 10 minutes after the incident and attended to both drivers.
Elzona Meyer from Heidelberg Medic Volunteers said the woman complained of pain in her chest, spine and right knee. Medics suspected she sustained a fracture in her left hand and suffered from concussion and was transported to Heidelberg Hospital.
The driver of the Alfa Romeo was tested on suspicion of alcohol use and was arrested on the scene for drunken driving by SAPS Nigel.
According to paramedics on the scene the injured should not be moved prior to the arrival of medical support as this can worsen or cause detrimental injuries.
A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened for further investigation.
