The Imperial Logistics truck carrying compressed wood was hijacked on the N3 highway near the Balfour bridge around 19:30 on December 10.
According to SAPS Heidelberg, the driver pulled over to do a routine check on his trailer when two men with firearms approached him and forced him into the truck.
“The hijackers drove north for about 30km where they instructed him to get off the truck. He was assaulted with a hammer and then tied up and left in the open field”, SAPS Heidelberg’s spokesperson, Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate said.
“His cell phone and R600 was taken from him”, Captain Tshilate added.
The driver was found next to the N3 by a private security vehicle and the case was reported.
According to SAPS Nigel’s spokesperson, W/O Madeleine von Wielligh they received reports of the truck travelling on the Heidelberg/Nigel Road around 00:10.
“W/O Grobbies Grobbelaar responded to the call and found the truck stationary close to the Jameson Park entrance with no occupants”, W/O Von Wielligh said.
The truck was carrying compressed wood valued at an estimate of R800 000.
SAPS Nigel said the Heidelberg/Nigel Road has become a popular route for hijackers in recent months which have led to an increase in recovered hijacked trucks in the area.
