The Alrapark swimming pool’s re-opening is facing yet another possible delay according to contracting engineers.
The quest by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to deliver a quality product initially led to a three-month delay from October to January which had residents up in arms over the holiday season. According to contractors, the pool might be delayed for another month to February as the facilities still need to undergo final touch-ups and safety checks.
The facility has an Olympic pool with eight lanes. Beside its function as a public pool, it is used by families and friends to interact socially and with trained lifeguards, it offers a safe place for children to swim and enjoy the outdoors.
EMM spokesperson Themaba Gadebe said the pool has been re-filled after full renovation.
“The pool was in a bad condition and had to undergo remedial work to the shell. The circulation system was replaced and upgraded with a new filtration system”, Gadebe said.
Contracting engineering company SCIP Engineering Group said they are in the final stages of renovations and once all safety checks are completed, the swimming pool, will be handed over to EMM for the launch towards the beginning of February.
“EMM is looking forward to announce the opening of the swimming pool but proper inspection is at a crucial stage and need to be done thoroughly”, Gadebe said.
“Our hope for the pool is that it will serve the community for the next 30 to 40 years. To do that, the upkeep and renovations on the pool are important”, Gadebe concluded.
