A man was arrested after he stole green mealies from the Elandspoort farm sittuated on the corner of the Nigel/Delmas and Balfour roads on February 4. Jan Petzer was travelling to Alra Park on the Balfour Road when he noticed a man carrying a plastic bag running out of the plantations towards Eeufees Avenue.
“I made a U-turn and followed him until he disappeared behind a bush next to Noah’s Ark. As I was about to report the incident to SAPS Nigel, two mounted police officers turned into Eeufees Avenue and I informed them of where the man was hiding”, he said.
“When the police officers approached the bush, the man came walking out without a shirt and empty handed”, he added.
On closer investigation the police officers found a bag filled with green mealies in a ditch and arrested the man.
SAPS Nigel’s spokesperson Madeleine von Wielligh said the man is being held in custody and will face charges of theft.
