Two arrested after house burglary

Nigel police members arrested two men following a house burglary in Shipley Road on February 23.

Nigel police members arrested two men following a house burglary in Shipley Road on February 23.
A domestic worker noticed around 12:00 a white Hyundai bakkie occupied by four men parked in the driveway.
She heard a loud noise and realised they were busy breaking down the front door.
She made her way to a back room and while hiding, she called Monitor 24 Security and her employer’s brother, Andre Gindra for assistance.
The men apparently entered the house and started loading valuable items onto the back of the bakkie moments before Paul Visser (Monitor 24) and Andre arrived.
“We saw three men exiting the house, driving off in the bakkie towards West Riding Road”, Paul said.
Andre radioed Nigel Community of Patrollers (NCOP) and Nigel Community Police Forum (CPF) with the vehicle’s specifications, who then reported the burglary to SAPS Nigel.
“The domestic worker stated that there were four men at the scene. Since we only saw three men leaving, I inspected the house before chasing after the bakkie”, Paul said.
As he searched the house, he found one intruder hiding in a closet and restrained the man until SAPS Nigel arrived.
SAPS Nigel’s spokesperson W/O Madeleine von Wielligh said NCOP and CPF patrollers recovered the unoccupied bakkie around 12:30 at the back of Laerskool Hannes Visagie with some of the stolen goods on the back.
“We suspect the bakkie to be stolen as the chassis and engine numbers are removed and the numberplates linked to another vehicle registered in the Eastern Cape”, she said.
SAPS Nigel, NCOP and CPF members conducted a search of the area and later found a second suspect on the run in Ferrybridge Road where he was detained and arrested.
A plasma television set, computer box and laptop were recovered with jewellery items still missing from the scene.
“This was the first burglary at my sister’s house since she moved here in 2012. We are shocked by the incident but also grateful for the rapid response from patrolling units and Monitor 24”, Andre said.
This was the 31st burglary case reported in Nigel this year, which is lower compared to 47 burglary cases during the first two months of 2014.
“However, over the past year CPF and NCOP patrolling units have become more active and their presence in neighbourhoods shows burglaries decreasing”, W/O Von Wielligh said.
In February last year 29 burglaries were reported compared to eight over the past month.
Nigel Police ask residents to be vigilant at all times and to report any suspect behaviour on 011 812 6500.
