Heidelberg’s businesses to pay for Lesedi’s debt crisis

Unafordable price increases can lead to businesses closing their doors.

Businesses in Heidelberg are getting exorbitant electricity bills since the beginning of July and some have seen as much as a 212% hike in their municipal bills.

This, according to DA members is Lesedi Local Municipality’s effort to get back the funds they are losing due to consumers not paying their bills, illegal electricity connections and the indigent policy.

Municipal workers are fearing for their life if they try and disconnect illegal connections and businesses in Heidelberg are paying the price.

Some businesses have indicated to HERAUT that they won’t be able to pay the bills and that if there is no relieve, they will have to close shop.

Heidelberg Chamber of Business indicated during their meeting last night, that they will not leave the matter as is and that they will fight this exorbitant hike.

In LLM’s official document, a 12,20% electricity hike was indicated as from July 1.

Some of Heidelberg’s big factories and businesses have stated that they have had an increase of up to R1 million which means that these companies are no longer profitable.

Should these companies be forced to close their doors, it will have a devastating impact on Heidelberg’s economy and its residents
