The City of Ekurhuleni in partnership with SASCOC and the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Center, yesterday hosted a successful Olympics Day.

South Africa’s top athletes took time off from their busy schedule – just before jetting off to the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Samoa and the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville – to enjoy the day’s festivities with amateur athletes from across Ekurhuleni and partaking in a 5 km fun walk, 7.9 km run and aerobics sessions.

Olympics Day is the only annual worldwide event of the Olympic movement which serves as an ideal platform to encourage people to become more active while by highlighting the benefits of being physically active.

Banyana Banyana stars that represented South Africa in women’s football at the 2012 London Olympics, Refiloe Jane, Janine Van Wyk and Amanda Dlamini also joined in the day’s activities.

Young people were taught about the importance of the Olympism philosophy of life that combines the values of a balanced mind, will and body. They soon learnt that the Olympics are not just about competing for medals but also tackling the issues of racism and fairness, as well as working with communities.
