One robber was shot dead instantly and two more wounded after opening fire on Heidelberg Police at 22:00 on the R23 near Overkruin.
Four suspects stormed into a business in Shalimar Ridge at 21:30 last night and held the owner and his brother at gunpoint.
The suspects took cellphones and cash and sped off in the brother’s Kia bakkie that was parked in front of the business. The brothers summoned an off duty policeman living nearby and the three gave chase.
The policeman send an emergency call to his colleagues who intercepted the robbers on the R23. They started shooting at the police and the two constables returned fire.
The robber in the back of the bakkie died instantly and two others were taken to Heidelberg Hospital in a serious condition. One of the suspects managed to escape.
Two unlicensed firearms were also recovered on the scene.
