EMM launches operation bumber-to-bumper: escalated, ahead of festive season
Ekurhuleni chief of police Bafana Mahlabe and executive mayor Mondli Gungubele launched the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) Festive Season campaign under the theme Operation Bumper-to-Bumper: Escalated on December 2.
The law enforcement campaign is intended to intensify police visibility, road safety, crime prevention, traffic and by-law enforcement throughout the month.
The chief of police indicated that police visibility will be intensified as many people fall victim to crime during the festive season.
“To ensure that police presence is felt, we will be deploying our peace corps who will patrol around shopping malls. There will also be more metro police officers guarding townships, suburbs and various central business districts,” Mahlabe said.
After the official launch, the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor took to the streets with a message of safety as he interacted with the motorists at a blitz operation on the M2 in Germiston.
Road blocks, stop and search, drug peddling, drunken driving, illegal mining, armed robberies, hi-jackings and land invasion are amongst the areas that Operation Bumper-to-Bumper: Escalated will focus on. These are all intended to ensure compliance with the law.
While the EMPD focuses on crime and traffic duties, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services will also be on high alert and will set up mini-roadside stations on all high-accident routes and major freeways, including the N3, N17, N12 and the Albertina Sisulu corridor.
