Late penalty drama as Mthambama’s double save secures draw for Cambridge
A dramatic late penalty and a heroic double save by young goalkeeper Banele “Casillas” Mthambama ensured Cambridge walked away with a valuable point in a tense 0-0 clash against Kathorus on March 14
Cambridge and Kathorus shared the spoils on March 14 after playing out a tense and entertaining 0-0 draw in a match defined by relentless attacking play and outstanding goalkeeping.
Both sides came out with intent, going toe-to-toe in a physical, fast-paced encounter. Supporters were treated to end-to-end action as each team pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, only to be denied by disciplined defending and sharp reflexes from both goalkeepers.
The decisive moment arrived in the 85th minute when Kathorus was awarded a penalty, offering a golden chance to snatch victory.

However, Cambridge’s young goalkeeper, Banele “Casillas” Mthambama, delivered a standout performance, producing a heroic double save to keep his side level. Cambridge turned defence into attack moments later, creating a late scoring opportunity, but they were unable to convert as the match edged toward its conclusion.
Cambridge chairman Ignatius Maphike praised the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.
“What a match, and the gods of football were certainly with us. A win would have taken us to second place, while a loss could have seen us lose touch with the leaders. We will take the point and move forward. We thank our supporters who came out in numbers to support the boys. We truly appreciate their presence, and we give credit to the team for the fight and determination they showed on the field,” he said.
