Heidelberg ladies mark milestone with first EGHA promotional league match
Heidelberg’s newly formed ladies’ hockey team has taken to the field for the first time in the EGHA Promotional League, marking a significant step forward for women’s sport in the town despite a challenging debut result.
Heidelberg’s ladies’ hockey team achieved a historic milestone on April 12, when they competed in their first-ever match in the EGHA ladies’ promotional league during the opening round of fixtures held at St Dominic’s School Astro.
The side faced Naledi Hornets Ladies in what marked Heidelberg’s official entry into organised women’s hockey at this level, signalling a significant step forward for the sport in the local community.
The fixtures formed part of round one of the promotional leagues, which featured a full programme of matches showcasing emerging talent across both the ladies’ and men’s divisions.
Although Heidelberg did not secure a victory in their debut outing, the team reflected positively on the experience, emphasising the value of participation at this level as they continue to develop.
Chairperson Rowleën Welsh acknowledged both the challenge and the opportunity presented by their first appearance.
“This was our first match as a newly formed team, and while the result was not in our favour, the experience has been invaluable. The game highlighted areas that require improvement, but it also demonstrated the team’s commitment, resilience, and willingness to grow.
“We have taken important lessons from this encounter and remain focused on building cohesion and improving our performance going forward. This marks the beginning of our journey, and we are confident that we will continue to improve with each match,” she said.
Welsh also added that the occasion was a proud and defining moment for Heidelberg.
“This is a proud and historic moment, and for the first time, we witnessed our ladies representing the town in an official league. It reflects the dedication, passion, and collective effort invested in establishing this team.
“The establishment of the Heidelberg ladies’ team reflects a growing interest in hockey among women in the area and underscores the expanding opportunities for female participation in the sport. It is anticipated that this development will encourage increased youth involvement and contribute to the long-term sustainability of hockey within the community,” she said.
