Hat-trick leads Cambridge FC to convincing final day victory
A clinical second-half display and a hat-trick from Alizwe General helped Cambridge FC secure a 4-1 victory over Vrrphaa Nation FC, ending their season on a high and confirming a sixth-place finish.
Cambridge FC brought their Hollywood Bets League campaign to a successful conclusion with a commanding 4-1 victory over Vrrphaa Nation FC at Jim Fouché Stadium on June 6.
With a strong finish to the season firmly in their sights, the Nigel-based outfit produced an impressive performance to secure all three points and cement a sixth-place finish in the league standings.
Cambridge started brightly, controlling possession and dictating the tempo through the midfield.
The hosts’ movement and pace caused problems for the visitors throughout the opening half, but despite creating several promising attacking opportunities, they were unable to break the deadlock. Vrrphaa Nation remained organised defensively, resulting in a tightly contested first half that ended goalless.
The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the restart when Alizwe General found the back of the net within five minutes of the second half.
The goal lifted Cambridge’s confidence and allowed them to take control of the contest. General doubled the lead with 20 minutes remaining, finishing clinically to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Although Cambridge continued to dominate possession, Vrrphaa Nation responded with increased urgency and capitalised on a defensive lapse to reduce the deficit to 2-1.Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished by the outstanding General, who completed his hat
-trick with a superbly struck free-kick five minutes before full-time. Cambridge then added further gloss to the scoreline when Levaan Rose netted late on to seal a convincing 4-1 victory.
Cambridge FC coach Dennis Metsana praised his squad’s resilience throughout a challenging season.
“All credit must go to the players, who continued to give their best despite the difficult circumstances we faced throughout the campaign.
Their commitment and determination made this result possible,” he said.
The club’s chairperson, Ignatius Maphike, also reflected on the team’s achievements and highlighted the financial challenges faced during the season.
“There were many occasions when we were uncertain how we would fulfil our fixtures, but through faith, perseverance and the dedication of everyone involved, we managed to complete the season. We appeal to local businesses and stakeholders to support this project so that we can continue providing opportunities for young people and keep them engaged in positive activities through football,” he said.
