Serial rapist gets triple life sentence for attacking three minors
A serial child rapist plead guilty to three brutal attacks and received a life sentences in a Volksrust court.
VOLKSRUST – A serial rapist, Elphas Ellias Shabangu (38), received three life sentences in the Volksrust Regional Court on June 25 for the rape of three minors.
According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, provincial police spokesperson, the first incident occurred on October 11, 2023 in eMkhondo (previously Piet Retief).
“Shabangu approached an eight-year-old girl while she was at home. He asked her to buy him a box of matches from a nearby shop, handed her R5, and told her she could keep R2,” Mdhluli said.
When she returned, the accused who was unknown to the girl at the time, persuaded her to accompany him to a nearby sports ground.
Upon arrival, he grabbed her and raped her before fleeing the scene.
The second incident, which also occurred in eMkhondo on October 18, 2023, involved a nine-year-old girl.
The girl was playing with her younger brother when she was approached by Shabangu, who asked her to go call his female friend.
“He then followed her to an abandoned house near a church where he raped her. He gave her R2 and instructed her not to tell anyone.”
