Baby found in pit toilet
A newborn baby was found in a public pit toilet in the Mabuza Farm settlement outside Ermelo on Friday. A 20-year-old woman appeared in court on Monday in connection with the incident.
Police are investigating a case of concealment of birth and attempted murder after a newborn baby was found in a public pit toilet at the Mabusa farm settlement near Ermelo on Friday.
Police spokesman for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo, said a member of the public heard noises while using the toilet at about 18:15 that evening.
Passers-by were called to assist and they then heard a baby cry. The structure covering the pit was removed and a woman passer-by searched through the contents and uncovered a newborn baby boy wrapped in a plastic bag.
The child was taken to the Ermelo Provincial Hospital where he is currently being treated. Authorities are looking into placing the child in the care of a grandmother.
A 20-year-old woman was subsequently arrested and charged with concealment of birth. The charge against her has been revised to one of attempted murder.
She appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
