Ermelo cares

The community can get involved by dropping off water, empty containers and donations at Suzuki in Church Street.

Local businesses and members of the community took hands to help those in the drought-stricken areas of the Free State.

The first convoy, with a load of 4500 litres of water, left for Senekal in the early hours on Saturday morning.

The organisers wish not to be named, their aim being to help those in need and not for their own gain.

Every business and person they approached offered to help without hesitation and a few days after initiating the project enough water had been collected to make the first trip.

They also received cash donations which will be used to fill water tankers.

According to one of the organisers it is impossible to explain the extent of the drought. The whole of Senekal consists of sand without a blade of grass in sight.

As long as there is a need for water, they will keep on distributing.

Other places in need of water have been identified, but for the time being their focus is on Senekal.

“Our community opened up their hearts and we are grateful for every drop of water, donations and willingness to assist,” said one of the organisers.

They hope to be able to make another trip this weekend.
