Community members are disgruntled about the lack of sanitation in the informal settlement in Ext 1 in Wesselton.
This became apparent to the Highvelder Newspaper after the recent tragedy where a two-year-old boy drowned in a pit toilet.
Residents feel that if there were proper toilet facilities in the area the incident could have been prevented and the little boy’s live spared.
According to one of the community members, they have reported the matter to the municipality on numerous occasions, to no avail.
Water and sanitation services remains one of the biggest challenges the community face.

Communal toilets in the area are overgrown with weeds and the doors are locked.
Ms Elisa Mahlangu, a 55-year-old pensioner, has been living in Ext 1, since 1994.
She had to build her own toilet at her stand.
“We had to get use to digging holes and building our own toilets.”
She explained that the ditch they dug is about 1,5m deep.
The Highvelder send enquiries to Msukaligwa Municipality about the water and sanitation in Ext 1, but no response have been received yet.
