Elderly woman from Ermelo averts scammers at Oak Centre

She insisted that she does not want the discount and told them to leave her alone, after which they ran out of the business.

ERMELO – Mr Theo Craven, district manager for the South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) Gert Sibande Region, warned residents to be vigilant as two people recently tried scamming an elderly woman.

According to a voice note that was send out on emergency groups, two women approached the woman trying to convince her that she could receive an 80% discount off her purchase.

“They approached her and said she could get discount on the items she was buying, but needed to do this through another woman, called Zanele,” Mr Craven said.

She declined the offer and said she would rather pay for the items and didn’t need the discount.

They kept trying to convince her, and incidentally, one of their phones rang with “Zanele” purportedly on the other end.

She insisted that she did not want the discount and told them to leave her alone, after which they ran out of the business.

The incident took place at about 15:00 at the Oak Centre on April 14.

Mr Craven advised all residents to take note of the incident and urged them to  alert the authorities immediately when they are approached by these women.
