Man who diverted liquor cargo during lockdown, fined heavily

He was sentenced to a fine of R100 000 or serve four  years imprisonment, of which R 50 000 was suspended for a period of five years on condition that he does not commit similar offence during the period of suspension.

Cornelis Hendrik Maritz (58) was found guilty and sentenced in the Middelburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for contravention of the customs and excise Act 91 of 1964 on February 6.

Maritz intentionally diverted cargo transporting liquor to the value of R 1 525 715,31 from Germiston to Ermelo without the South African Revenue Services (SARS) documentation on June 6, 2020.

He was sentenced to a fine of R100 000 or serve four  years imprisonment, of which R 50 000 was suspended for a period of five years on condition that he does not commit similar offence during the period of suspension.

His co-accused who is out on bail is expected to appear again in court on February 7, pending the chinese interpreter services.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for priority crime investigation, Major General Nico Gerber, applauded the work done by a multidisciplinary team.

“The Hawks are committed to work with all agencies and stakeholders to fight crime within Mpumalanga ,” Gerber said.
