Ermelo resident slams municipality over persistent water leak: ‘Incompetence or lack of care?’

A persistent water leak along Havenga Road has raised serious concerns about infrastructure management and who is responsiblie.

ERMELO – A persistent and seemingly untraceable flow of water continues to cause concern along Havenga Road near Gilbert’s Mining & Industrial, raising questions about infrastructure management and accountability.

For several hundred metres, water can clearly be seen running along the surface of the road, with no clear source in sight.

Despite visible excavations in the area, possibly an attempt to locate or fix the issue, it appears the underlying cause remains unresolved.

Frustration is mounting as a long-standing water leak near Gilberts Mining continues with no fix in sight. One resident questions if it’s incompetence, or indifference.

According to Iain Gilbert of Gilbert’s Mining, the problem has been reported to the Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) on numerous occasions, but no effective action has been taken.

“We’ve logged complaints repeatedly, yet nothing ever gets done. It’s extremely frustrating,” Gilbert said.

He further claimed that they have been “led to believe” the source of the water might lie within the nearby Transnet premises, although this has not been confirmed.

“If that’s the case, and if it is Transnet’s responsibility, then the municipality should cut off their water supply until they do the necessary repairs,” he added.

According to him, the continued water flow suggests either a lack of concern or a lack of competence on the municipality’s part.
