Residents threaten escalation over three-year Ermelo water crisis

After years of unreliable supply, residents are demanding answers and action as water outages continue to disrupt daily life.

ERMELO – A coalition of residents led by Lourens de Beer, Silvija Breytenbach and Sonicha Korczynski has issued a final notice to Msukaligwa Local Municipality after documenting three years of ongoing water infrastructure failures.

The group warned that if water supply and transparency are not restored within 24 hours, the matter will be escalated to the South African Human Rights Commission and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Repeated outages lasting up to seven days have affected multiple streets, with residents citing systemic failures.

The municipality acknowledged challenges, including ageing pipelines, storage limitations and supply issues in high-lying areas.

Temporary measures remain in place while long-term upgrades are planned.

Residents, however, say a consistent water supply has yet to be achieved, leaving households uncertain about when services will stabilise.
