Msukaligwa Local Municipality mayor involved in accident near Mbombela

Zwane confirmed that the mayor was in Nelspruit for government-related business at the time.

The executive mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Mapulane Precious Nkosi, was involved in a car accident on the R40 near Mbombela this morning, March 6.

Nkosi, along with her two bodyguards, was transported to Mediclinic Nelspruit following the incident.

Lowvelder reports that the mayor, her two bodyguards, and the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and were admitted to the hospital around 10:30.

Nkosi was a passenger in a white Audi SUV travelling from Barberton to Mbombela when the accident occurred.

The collision happened when the other vehicle, travelling in the opposite direction, attempted to turn right onto Hilltop Road.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the mayor’s vehicle was accompanied by two black BMWs with their blue lights flashing.

However, these vehicles were not involved in the crash.

When Lowvelder arrived at the scene, only the two vehicles involved in the accident were present. There was no sign of the escort vehicles.

According to one of the traffic officers at the scene, the mayor was placed on a stretcher and taken into the ambulance, while her bodyguards managed to enter the vehicle on their own. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries to his arm and was also transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Mandla Zwane, spokesperson for the Msukaligwa Municipality, shared that the municipality’s information at this stage is limited, stating that they are aware the mayor was admitted to the hospital following the accident for a check-up. Zwane confirmed that the mayor was in Nelspruit for government-related business at the time.

This stretch of road has witnessed a series of accidents in recent weeks, including a fatal accident involving a BMW driver.
