DSD and partners drive social change in Ermelo
Community leaders and parents unite in Ermelo to fight drug abuse, GBV, and teenage pregnancy through active awareness campaigns.
ERMELO – The Department of Social Development (DSD), in partnership with various community stakeholders, has recently rolled out a series of awareness campaigns at local schools and churches, addressing some of the most pressing social issues in the community.
These initiatives focused on substance abuse, crime prevention, gender-based violence (GBV), and teenage pregnancy, aiming to encourage positive behavioural change and empower residents with knowledge.
At New Ermelo Primary School, the DSD collaborated with Constable Ashley Magro of the SAPS, the school principal, and the school governing body to host a parent engagement session.
The meeting centred on substance abuse and crime prevention, providing parents with crucial strategies to help protect their children and contribute to a safer environment.
Sibusiso Mnisi-Masina of the DSD said their GBV awareness campaign at Nooitgedacht was well received.

“This event was a joint effort with the Department of Agriculture, and featured input from officials across departments who encouraged open discussion and community involvement in addressing GBV,” said Mnisi-Masina.
Mnisi-Masina was also invited to speak at the local Dutch Reformed Church.
“The presentation aimed to inspire behavioural change, encourage a love for God, and guide young people towards a brighter future,” he said.
These collaborative efforts reflect the DSD’s ongoing commitment to community outreach and addressing the social challenges residents continue to face.
